Vehicle Damage & Insurance Policy

Explorers Auto Rental provides insurance as required by Jamaican law for all vehicles operating on public roads. This insurance does not cover damages caused by renters. Each renter is fully responsible for all damages to the vehicle they rent, unless separate protection or coverage is validated and accepted by the company.
A. Partial Damage Waiver (PDW)
The Partial Damage Waiver (PDW) is an optional protection product offered by Explorers Auto Rental.
PDW is not insurance; it is a contractual waiver limiting the renter's financial responsibility for certain types of damage to the rental vehicle.
The renter remains fully responsible for any portion not covered under the waiver, including but not limited to:
- Loss of use
- Interior damage
- Damage caused by negligence
- Violations of rental agreement terms
B. Security Deposit or Credit Card Authorization
Renters who decline the PDW must provide a refundable security deposit or credit card authorization at the start of the rental.
This deposit serves as protection against potential damage, loss, or theft during the rental period.
The deposit will be released in full upon safe return of the vehicle in the same condition it was rented, minus any applicable charges.
C. Credit Card Coverage
Many major credit cards offer rental vehicle damage coverage. Renters are encouraged to confirm coverage eligibility with their card issuer before renting.
Coverage must be valid in Jamaica.
A letter of coverage from the credit card company must be presented at the time of rental to activate this option.
D. Third-Party Insurance Policy
Renters may obtain damage or accident coverage through an independent insurance provider.
Such policies may include driver and passenger benefits (accident, death, disability, etc.).
Proof of coverage must be submitted and verified by Explorers Auto Rental before the vehicle is released.
If the renter:
- Declines the Partial Damage Waiver (PDW), and
- Fails to present valid credit card coverage, and
- Does not provide proof of third-party insurance,
Then the renter will be fully liable for all costs resulting from:
- Damage to the vehicle
- Total loss or theft
- Loss of use
- Any associated fees
Explorers Auto Rental strongly recommends that renters:
- Obtain a personal or third-party insurance policy offering accident, death, or disability protection for the driver and passengers.
- Confirm that any current insurance or credit card benefits extend to rental vehicles in Jamaica.
These protections ensure peace of mind and minimize out-of-pocket expense in the event of an incident.
